The greatest Indian cricketers of all time

The greatest Indian cricketers of all time

India has produced some of the greatest International cricketers in the world over past few decades. While most fans will want to stay up-to-date about upcoming matches cricket of the team India, it is a good idea to look at some of the best cricketers of India thus far:

  1. Sachin Tendulkar

This won’t surprise anyone, but Sachin Tendulkar, the run machine, is the greatest batsman India has ever witnessed. Tendulkar is the first batsman in the world to score a double hundred and has scored the highest number of runs as well as centuries in both ODIs and tests. He is the only player to have played 200 tests and scored a hundred.

Apart from that, he is also the best scorer in the world cup tournaments, with over two thousand runs on his name. Tendulkar also has 201 international wickets on his name.

  1. Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar, the little master, was the first batsman to accumulate 10000 test runs. He scored 34 centuries, the highest for nearly two decades before Tendulkar would break the record in 2005. He scored 774 runs in his debut series against a mighty West Indian side, the highest ever by any batsman in a single series. Gavaskar is the best individual scorer against West Indies to date – an incredible achievement especially given that the Caribbean nation had a renowned pace attack to be one of the best to date.

  1. Kapil Dev

Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev were two greats who popularised cricket in the country. Kapil Dev was the best all-rounder India ever saw. He captained the side to a world cup victory in 1983, beating West Indies, which was considered the most unformidable team at the time. He was also the highest wicket-taker in the world with 434 wickets of the world for five years and for India for nearly ten years before Kumble broke his record.

  1. Rahul Dravid

Called the Great Wall of India, Dravid has scored the second-highest number of runs for India, next only to Sachin. Considered one of the best test batters, Dravid was considered Mr. Dependable for his ability to take the team out of troubled waters. The current coach of the Indian team, he was the first player to score a century in all test-playing nations.

Though he kept for the side in several matches, he continues to hold the record for the highest number of catches in test cricket. He has played the highest number of deliveries for any batsman in 286 innings and never got a golden duck.

  1. Virat Kohli

The most successful captain of the Indian team in test cricket (with forty wins), Kohli needs no introduction. Considered one of the most incredible batters of all time, Kohli once scored four test double-hundreds in four consecutive matches. He has the most ODI centuries while chasing and is the fastest player to complete ten thousand runs in ODIs. He has the highest number of runs in T20I cricket. Kohli is also known to have spearheaded India toward new aggressive playing styles.

  1. MS Dhoni

Dhoni is the best wicketkeeper-batsman in India, with over ten thousand ODI runs on his name. He also led the team to a T20I world cup victory in 2007 and an ODI world cup victory in 2011. His 183 not out is the best score by any wicketkeeper in ODIs.

  1. Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble is India’s highest and leading wicket-taker at the moment. He has he fourth-highest test wicket tally in the world. He is also one of only three players in the world to have taken all ten wickets in a test innings. Kumble was one of the greatest match winners the country ever saw. His current record of 619 wickets (the highest by India) is likely to remain unbroken in the foreseeable future. Kumble also has the highest number of wickets by an Indian baller in ODIs, with 334 wickets on his name.

  1. Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh has got a position in this list on the back of his excellent contributions in the 2007 T20I world cup, where he scored the fastest T20 fifty ever (just 12 balls) including six sixes of all balls of a single over. Yivi was also the man of the tournament in the 2011 world cup because of his performance both with bat and ball. Despite suffering from several injuries and medical issues throughout his career, Yuvraj Singh proved himself as one of the greatest batsmen the country ever saw.

  1. Sourabh Ganguli

Sourabh Ganguli captained India to the finals of the 2003 world cup and was also the second-highest run scorer in the tournament, behind only the great Sachin Tendulkar. He was one of the fastest batsmen to score ten thousand runs and was a part of several successful partnerships with Sachin Tendulkar. India also won the ICC champions trophy for the first time under his excellent captaincy. Ganguli also deserves credit for having started building a team that would later come to dominate the world stage.

  1. Rohit Sharma

The current captain of the Indian national cricket team, Rohit Sharma, is also the only batsman in the world with three double hundreds in ODIs. His highest score of 264 is the best individual score by any batsman in the world. Sharma also so scored four hundreds in the 2019 world cup tournament edition – that is the highest number of centuries ever by a single batsman in a single edition of the tournament. If he manages to score another hundred in the coming world cup, he will match Sachin Tendulkar’s and Ricky Ponting’s record of most ODI world cup centuries.

The Bottom Line

Before wrapping up, it must be observed that there are several other great players who haven’t made it to the list, including:

  • Virender Sehwag – the first batsman of India to score a triple century.
  • Harbhajan Singh – the second most successful baller of India.
  • VVS Lakshman – Called very, very special Lakshman; he was one of the best test players.
  • Ashwin – the greatest match winner of India right now in test cricket.
  • Zaheer Khan – Khan was one of the best fast ballers in India
  • And many more.

Over time, India will only continue to add more great players as there are many India upcoming cricket matches in the next few months, and it will be an exciting time for cricket fans of the country.
