GM has revealed the brain for Ultra Cruise, the handheld drive system door to the next door, which aims to have a dealer in 2023. Announced in October 2021, Ultra Cruise Build in the Super Cruise system has been offered in the selection of Cadillac, GMC, and other models, expanding The hands-off system is 95% of all driving scenarios.
Super cruise, in its current form, allows the driver to take their hands from the steering wheel on the highway divided and mapped. While humans in the driver’s seat are still officially responsible for car operations, they do not need to touch the steering wheel to maintain the position of the vehicle on the track.
Newer updates for Super Cruise have added vehicle capabilities to automatically change the path to maintain the specified speed, and handle situations where trailers or other items are being drawn. Leave an area where Super Cruise has mapping, but – like attracting the highway and to the road surface – and the system will be disabled. That’s where Ultra Cruise is set to enter.

The result of the request is a new Ultra Cruise computing system. About the size of two laptops stacked above the others, GM said, it was based on the platform riding Snapdragon Qualcomm – indeed, this was the first to use it – with two Snapdragon SA8540P SOCs and one AI Accelerator SA9000p. It will be responsible for handling the input of the camera, radar, and lidar, feeding sensor fusion produced into a stack of proprietary GM software developed by car makers.
Apart from riding Snapdragon, there is an infineon aurix TC397 onboard too. It was a special chassis, powertrain, connectivity, and autonomous driving microcontrollers, which are intended to manage system security safely. ItIL-D Compliant, GM shows, the level of automotive safety integrity “high risk reduction requires.” In short, it is responsible for the critical mission system – if they fail – can lead to serious injury or death.
The Ultra Cruise system will be woven to the Ultifi GM platform, the first software architecture for its upcoming vehicles based on the GM vehicle intelligence platform. It will also allow the support of deep increase, where most if not all various vehicle systems are able to update software from time to time, pushing OTA (over-the-air). It can be used to add new features or safety systems because GM develops it.
The resulting computing system is cooled air, for simplicity, and the core part of the vehicle with ultra cruise functionality. Assuming it arrives on time, technology must offer a big step forward for the owner. “Customers will be able to travel by truly free with cruise ships in almost every road including city streets, roads of subdivisions and paved countryside roads,” said GM last year, as well as the highway where Super Cruise is currently operating.
GM said it expected Ultra Cruise to debut in 2023, with a cadillac luxury name board getting technology first. It will include the Cadillac Celestiq to come, which will be fully electrical.
